Samaná became a refuge for many Dominicans seeking to escape the Haitian occupation. In 1844, the Dominican Republic declared its independence from Haiti, and Samaná was one of the first provinces to join the new country.

 

Samaná has a history linked to pirates. The bay was a target for privateers and pirates in search of treasure. Francis Drake and Jean Lafitte found refuge in the area, hiding booty in the caves and mangroves. These stories and legends persist, with rumors of treasure still hidden.
