Beyond a tourist destination

Learn about the history of Samaná

Samana Bay has a rich history dating back to pre-Columbian times, when the Tainos inhabited the region. During the Spanish colonization, the bay became an important port for the trade of slaves and raw materials. Later, in the 19th century, it was the scene of important battles between Dominican independence fighters and Spanish colonial forces. Today, it is an important tourist destination and a place of great ecological and cultural value.
